Remember Me

the best games ever made
#1 - the best games ever made on Tue, Jul 1st, 2008 - 11:47 pm
okay, so after literally a few minutes of thinking, i've come up with a list of [my] top 5 best games ever made. Don't argue, I'm right. It occured to me that I should make this list, because in the last few years I haven't come across a game I've liked enough to still like 2 years later. There's nothing out there, FPS has been done to death, RPGs are ruined, MMOs are expensive, and so on. Alright, so here's the list, in descending order.

THE BEST GAMES EVER MADE:
1. Age of Empires 2: The Conquerors Expansion
I've played literally thousands of matches and thousands of hours of this game with the same objectives, varying only slightly. By the far best RTS game ever made. No game I've ever played has even come close.

2. Diablo II
Although it was hard to choose between this and the original Diablo, I choose this becuase I still bring it out from time to time to play it. I've beaten it several times, made several characters, and still know most of the quests from heart. And I never even played battlenet once.

3. Return to Castle Wolfenstein / Enemy Territory
These two games (especially the first) are the best FPS games ever made. It was possible to enjoy every map with only a handful of people, to over 20, 30, or 40. The maps were fun and well-made, the feel of the game was just right, and the objectives and gameplay were just so fun. In the abused field of WW2 games, these two stand out among the crowd, born from the original FPS game: Wolfenstein 3D. They had a lot to live up to, and managed to pull it off.

4. Quake II
This one of the first games I ever played, and though I never did admit it, I don't think I ever beat the single player mode from start to finish without using god mode. Again, thousands of hours of gameplay on my part, playing with Karn, Greg, Gord, Colby, even my mom back when I was a young 'un. This was the game, I think, that ultimately persuaded me to even take video games seriously or anything. It's just great, and Quake III, IV, and Quake Wars have simply not lived up to it, being made by different companies and all that. It's one of the last of the first FPS games, all of which were priceless and full of memories (yes, Doom as well!) I still fire up this game to play short deathmatch rounds on The Edge today. It's timeless.

5. Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit
This one was hard... I think the best part of it was that it was a game that Colby and I both enjoyed growing up. I remember specifically that I loved the Lambo. Diablo, but was afraid of the handling, so choose the Corvette as well... I also remember hating the Aston Martin (guess Top Gear influenced me somewhere along the way). I also remember the first time Colby brgan racing some Jaguar in Manual mode, which confused me because it wasn't the fastest car and required pressing extra buttons, until he beat me several times. It was with this game that I first got into cars, albeit a small ammount, and realized the advantages and fun of playing in manual in all car games afterwards. Colby and I played this game for hundreds if not thousands of hours, if not racing against each other than trying to catch each other in a police car. I do remember, though, that my favourite car was the Ferrari Maranello. Which I always modded the colour into being a bright lime green. Augh.

MY LEAST FAVOURITE GAMES EVER MADE: (in no particular order, and noooo one will agree lol)
1. Halo
I don't like that the game is so popular for incorporting ideas that were already used in games like Unreal Tournament. When I ask people what's so appealing about Halo, the two most popular responses at the time (I think either the first or second one) were that you could have 16 people playing at once, and the vehicles. Okay, honestly... PC FPS games are way ahead of you... I guess why it was so appealing is that these concepts were new to the console? I just don't know. The FOV is fucked up, too.

2. Enemy Territory: Quake Wars
The thing that bugs me so much about the game (aside from the crummy maps, the stupid weapons, the chuggy-ness feel of the gameplay, and the dumb objectives) is that fact that it says "Enemy Territory" in the name. I was looking forward to this game from the beginning, and even forked out the money for the beta. What I don't like the most about this game (sorry Cheese) is that it claims to be Enemy Territory, but it just isn't. Wolfenstein Enemy Territory was such a better game, and I was expecting Quake Wars to at least be on par, if not better, and I felt it was a complete let-down. I think it would have been a lot better if it was just "Quake Wars," then I wouldn't have set my bar so high.

3. Guitar Hero
I suck at guitar hero harsh and I don't find it fun at all... and it bugs me when people come up to me and think they can play guitar better than me in real life when they don't know the different between a Stratocaster and a Telecaster (although I admit I'm not that good). Although, Slash himself did say that the best real-life guitarists suck the most at Guitar Hero because they're confused by the fact it's supposed to be a guitar. It just isn't. For the rest of you that just play it for fun, then good for you, I don't have anything against you, or the game for that matter. I just don't like it because of the idiots that it seems to have created. Especially the ones that start guitar lessons, and expect to be shredding like Slash in a matter of days, if not hours. It takes years and years to get to that point. I love hearing the stories my guitar teacher tells me, lol. I know he'll share my feelings here.

4. Mario Party Series
OKAY HONESTLY NINTENDO. WE DON'T NEED A NEW FUCKING MARIO PARTY GAME EVERY TWO MONTHS. Seriously, they take away all the good minigames, add a bunch of fucked up ones (like the ones Colby excels at), and just... augh. NINTENDO, you need to learn when to stop. It's been done. You did it. It's getting old, they're not fun anymore. Make something new for a change. And stop using Mario, he's a loser. Make Yoshi Party. Or Shy Guy. Or, even better, Cheep Cheeps. Cheep Cheeps are fucking sweet. I'm gonna go get a Cheep-Cheep background now.... :D

5. World of Warcraft
It costs money :'( And I sucked at it. And it took too long to level. lol

6. Need for Speed: Prostreet
I don't even need to explain myself there. "Race Days?" wtf?

Wow, very well thought out.

Even though I don't agree with you on some of those, and I love those games, I do COMPLETELY agree with your arguements. :)

I think a lot of people would disagree with you on Quake 3 being as good as Quake 2. As far as the online multiplayer experience anyway.

I agree and disagree with your list, but your right. cuz its tets list. lol.

1. AOE2 has got to be the funnest game ever, i mean you jsut cannot get bored of playing it. I suck at it but i still love playing it, and its the same thing over and over and over again. i really respect that in a game.

2. halo sucks, caleb can suck my dick.

3. Guitar hero is always looked upon wrong, personally i love guitar hero, and rockband series games. People always think that if you get 98% on easy that you can just bring out the real guitar and rock out..... its not even close to the truth, the game and a guitar isnt even similair one bit. when i play i dont think AHAHAHA IM GOOD AT GUITAR!!!! i think, k im good at this game that has a controller shaped liek a guitar. nothing more then a simple arcade game.

4. ETQW.....it was a good game once you understnad what your supposed to do, i was never good at it. its not a great game, but it was fun to play.

5. nfs prostreet....lmfao oh god...ricer central much?.... need for speed most wanted is a game that ill respect i had hours of fun, just running from the cops in a huge ass pursuit, and burning around in my first gen maro.

tet, im suprised you didnt mention fire emblem.

Quake Wars is similar to Top Gear, ambitious but rubbish. I still really like it though, if I'm lucky enough to find a good server.

Naw, Fire Emblem is fun but it doesn't have a place on a top 5 greatest games list. I was thinking about another game I kinda regretted not putting at #6, but I've already forgotten what it was. Guess it was a spur-of-the-moment thing.

... yeah, I can't remember. Guess it wasn't that good afterall, lol.

I think it's a pretty sweet list. Yep.

I wish there were better games out right now. Or even some interesting looking games (fps games) coming out. Anything good is years away.
