The stupid thing too is that I check this website like every day because I use the buttons on the top right as shortcuts. Just didn't scroll down enough to see that there were posts!

In the year 2016, what should an online forum look and feel like?

More importantly, since its goal is to allow for longer-form conversations, how might it complement popular social media channels to accomplish this?

I guess. Don't really like that.

One of these days I might remake cheesy forum. There's a lot of stuff I'd now design differently than the standard phpbb-style forum, or even reddit.

For example, having a scrollable "feed" is super popular these days, and it does a good job of providing a high-level overview of what's popular, and it can be compelling to check it repeatedly throughout the day

I'd also ditch categories and sub-forums and switch to tags. Too much can fit into multiple categories, and then the user doesn't know what their contribution is best suited for.

I'd also make it super easy to start new topics. Imagine if the forum was just a super organized and well-presented version of sup socks. Imagine dragging and dropping an image, or pasting a URL to start a new topic.

What is it about snapchat that is so compelling?

I think it's the low barrier to communication. It's so easy to take a picture and select a bunch of people to send it to. Even though the interaction between two people is somewhat superficial, it does still facilitate connectedness.

I'm imagining a forum where the barrier to contributing is super low. Someone can put up a link or upload a picture in a matter of seconds, and begin the communication. But because it's a forum and not twitter or facebook, actual conversations could potentially result from it.

I literally read this and thought, umm this is pretty much what reddit is.

but not really. I think your idea is a less social version of instagram if anything.
